Current Cannabis Laws

Cannabis cultivation in Jamaica

Jamaica’s relationship with cannabis runs deep across culture, spirituality, and economics. But it wasn’t until the Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Act of 2015 that the law caught up with reality.

Under the 2015 law, possession of 2 ounces (56 grams) or less is a petty offence. If you are found with this amount, police can issue a ticket (similar to a traffic citation) with a fine of J$500 (about US$3). You won’t be arrested, you won’t go to court, and it won’t show up on your criminal record. This was a landmark shift for the Caribbean.

The same law also established the Cannabis Licensing Authority (CLA), which oversees the legal medical, therapeutic, and scientific cannabis industry. Home cultivation of up to 5 plants per household is permitted for personal or therapeutic use.

Medical Marijuana

Jamaica’s medical cannabis system operates through licensed herb houses and authorized practitioners. The Cannabis Licensing Authority issues licenses for cultivation, processing, retail, and research. Qualifying conditions are broadly defined and the system is designed to be accessible.

For medical cardholders, the process is straightforward: visit a licensed practitioner, receive an authorization, and purchase from a licensed herb house or dispensary.

How tourists legally buy weed at Jamaica’s herb houses

Doctor's Cave Beach in Montego Bay, Jamaica

Jamaica is one of the most accessible Caribbean destinations for cannabis tourists. The legal path is short and inexpensive:

  1. Walk into a licensed herb house. No appointment needed at most locations.
  2. Get a temporary medical authorization. A nurse practitioner or doctor on staff issues the authorization on the spot, usually in about 10 minutes. Cost is around US$10. You will fill out a short intake form covering basic health questions.
  3. Buy at the same location. The herb house sells cannabis to you under the authorization for the duration of your visit, typically up to 30 days.

What to bring. Your passport for ID. Cash or card depending on the herb house. The authorization receipt to carry while you have product on you.

Where to go. The most established tourist-friendly herb houses are Kaya Herb House (Ocho Rios, Montego Bay, Kingston, Falmouth, Drax Hall), Epican (Kingston), Island Strains (Kingston), and the newer Cookies Jamaica retail. The rules to stay within.

  • The 2-ounce (56-gram) possession threshold applies to everyone, tourists and residents alike. Stay under it.
  • Public smoking is still an offence. Do not smoke on the beach, in restaurants, or walking down the street.
  • Your hotel or villa may or may not allow consumption on the property. Ask before you check in if it matters to your plans.
  • Keep your authorization receipt with you while you have cannabis on you. It is the document that makes your purchase legal.

Frequently asked questions

Is weed legal in Jamaica?

Cannabis is decriminalized in Jamaica. Possession of 2 ounces (56 grams) or less is a petty offence, ticketed like a parking fine with no arrest or criminal record. Medical and Rastafarian sacramental use is also protected. Public smoking remains an offence.

Is marijuana legal in Jamaica?

Marijuana is decriminalized, not fully legal. The 2015 Dangerous Drugs Amendment Act removed criminal penalties for personal-use amounts and created a medical and sacramental framework. The Cannabis Licensing Authority oversees the licensed medical industry.

Can tourists buy weed in Jamaica?

Yes. Tourists can visit a licensed herb house and obtain a temporary medical authorization for approximately US$10. The authorization allows legal purchase from licensed herb houses for the duration of your stay. Without it, you can possess but not legally buy.

Is weed legal in Jamaica for tourists in 2026?

Yes, with the same framework that has been in place since 2015. Tourists are not exempt from the 2-ounce decriminalization, and the medical-authorization pathway at herb houses lets visitors purchase cannabis legally. Nothing about that has changed for 2026.

Can you smoke weed in public in Jamaica?

No. Public smoking is still an offence. Smoke on private property, in your hotel or villa if it allows it, or at authorized herb house consumption lounges where available.

What is the legal amount of weed in Jamaica?

2 ounces (about 56 grams) is the threshold for the petty-offence ticket. Over 2 ounces moves into criminal charges. Cultivation of up to 5 plants per household is also permitted under the 2015 amendment.

Are you allowed to smoke weed in Jamaica?

On private property, yes. The 2015 law decriminalized personal possession and created a medical and sacramental framework. Public smoking remains illegal. Hotels and resorts set their own policies and many do not permit smoking on the property.
