Current Cannabis Laws

Jamaica’s relationship with cannabis runs deep — culturally, spiritually, and economically. But it wasn’t until the Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Act of 2015 that the law caught up with reality.
Under the 2015 law, possession of 2 ounces (56 grams) or less is a petty offence. If you’re found with this amount, police can issue a ticket — similar to a traffic citation — with a fine of J$500 (about US$3). You won’t be arrested, you won’t go to court, and it won’t show up on your criminal record. This was a landmark shift for the Caribbean.
The same law also established the Cannabis Licensing Authority (CLA), which oversees the legal medical, therapeutic, and scientific cannabis industry. Home cultivation of up to 5 plants per household is permitted for personal or therapeutic use.
Medical Marijuana
Jamaica’s medical cannabis system operates through licensed herb houses and authorized practitioners. The Cannabis Licensing Authority issues licenses for cultivation, processing, retail, and research. Qualifying conditions are broadly defined — the system is designed to be accessible.
For medical cardholders, the process is straightforward: visit a licensed practitioner, receive an authorization, and purchase from a licensed herb house or dispensary.
For Tourists

Jamaica is one of the most accessible Caribbean destinations for cannabis tourists, and here’s the practical path:
- Visit a licensed herb house — locations like Kaya Herb House in Ocho Rios, Kingston, and Montego Bay are the most well-known
- Get a temporary medical authorization — takes about 10 minutes, costs roughly US$10
- Purchase legally — the herb house will sell you cannabis under your authorization
A few things to keep in mind: public consumption is still illegal, so don’t smoke on the beach, in restaurants, or walking down the street. Your hotel or guesthouse may or may not be okay with it — ask first. Stick to private settings and you’ll be fine.
The 2oz possession limit applies to everyone — tourists and residents alike. Stay under that, keep your authorization receipt, and you’re within the law.
Dispensaries in Jamaica

Jamaica’s licensed herb houses and dispensaries are concentrated in the main tourist corridors:
- Kaya Herb House — Multiple locations (Ocho Rios, Montego Bay, Kingston). The most established and tourist-friendly option.
- Island Strains — Kingston
- Epican — Multiple locations
- Cookies Jamaica — Newer entrant with branded retail
