Tips for cannabis travelers

  • Know the law before you go. "Decriminalized" and "legal" are not the same thing. Check the specific country page.
  • Never bring cannabis on a plane or boat. Even between two legal jurisdictions, transporting cannabis across borders is a federal/international crime.
  • Don't smoke in public. Every Caribbean destination, even the legal ones, prohibits public consumption. Stick to private settings.
  • Caribbean cruises are a no-go. Every major cruise line bans cannabis onboard under maritime law. See our cruise guide for port-stop details.
  • Don't assume Dutch = Amsterdam. Aruba, Curacao, and Bonaire are Dutch territories but cannabis is illegal there. This catches many travelers off guard.
  • Bring your medical card. If you have a medical cannabis card from your home state/country, bring it. Puerto Rico and some other destinations recognize reciprocity.
