Cannabis in Bermuda: Laws & Tourist Guide
Is weed legal in Bermuda? Decriminalization of 7g, medical cannabis, and what tourists visiting this British territory need to know.
Last verified: April 13, 2026 · Misuse of Drugs (Decriminalisation of Cannabis) Amendment Act, 2017
Current Cannabis Laws
Bermuda’s Misuse of Drugs (Decriminalisation of Cannabis) Amendment Act 2017 removed criminal offences for possession of 7 grams or less. The act came into effect on December 20, 2017.
But here’s the catch: the law only decriminalizes possession. It remains illegal to consume, cultivate, traffic, or import cannabis in any quantity. Police can still seize cannabis even if you’re under 7g. And prior convictions are not automatically expunged.
Medical cannabis became accessible through a 2016 Supreme Court ruling, with import limits relaxed to 2,000 grams per year in 2020. Patients may import their own medicine.
For Tourists
Bermuda’s decriminalization is narrow. Having 7g or less means you won’t face criminal charges, but you can’t legally consume it, buy it, or bring it onto the island. There’s no retail, no dispensaries, and consumption is still an offence.
As a British Overseas Territory, full legalization attempts have faced resistance from the UK governor. Bermuda remains in limbo — partially reformed but far from a cannabis-friendly destination.
